"How to Podcast Campus Lectures"

Here is an excerpt from a recent article published in The Chronicle of Higher Education that presents some excellent points on the general topic of recording lectures for podcasting, or "coursecasting" as they refer to it. In addition to the very good analysis of the current state and challenges (both technical and practical) surrounding the overall issue of course podcast capture and delivery, this article also provides some very useful insights specifically related to Apple's iTunes U service.

The Chronicle of Higher Education
January 26, 2007

How to Podcast Campus Lectures

Advice on getting your institution’s ‘coursecasting’ program off to a good start

Along with hardware and software decisions, colleges looking to start campuswide coursecasting face a number of policy issues. Should podcasts be restricted to registered students, for instance, or should they be offered up to the Web at large? And who owns a lecture recording?

There are no one-size-fits-all answers to many of those questions. But the advice of college officials who have started extensive podcasting services can be condensed to six key points for those who are considering podcasting programs of their own:

Make it easy for professors.

Start small…

…but leave room to expand.

Ask students what they want.

Read the fine print.

Think seriously about intellectual property.
